Global Warming Retrospective

Calculated Risk has a must read post "UK Chief Scientist: This IS Global Warming." We have previously weighed in on this issue and our latest rantings follow.

From
07/20/05 Market Soapbox:

Last years hurricane season was one for the record books, ask any of those who own hyperinflated Florida real estate. This year, Dennis & Emily are just the tip of the iceberg. The really bad news is, this trend will continue to worsen.

The ozone hole allowed just enough additional UV in, the polar caps started melting and the process is started. It can be reversed but slowly over the next 50 years. The cool streams of polar water arriving in the deep ocean tranches will wreak havoc on "predictable" and "normal" weather patterns for years to come.

GAIA is pissed and we are going to pay, and dearly I might add, for as long as the oil sisters, and corporate military industrial complex rule the roost.

The above post was prior to Katrina & Rita. The hole we punched in the ozone layer is a chicken coming home to roost. Unusual and dramatically changing weather patterns are emerging globally.

The severity of these patterns will only worsen in the years to come, and will wreak havoc on our supply chain and harvest cycles. Last year, the Indian Gulf tsunami & the worst hurricane season in 20 years.

This year, so far, the City and Port of New Orleans, Houston, Port Arthur, the Gulf of Mexico oil infrastructure, and the largest and most important shipping artery in this country have been ravaged. And the global economic fallout of these disasters has yet to be felt.

I went on record with friends last year in my belief that a terrorist strike was very probable near the Suez canal or Port Arthur, Lake Charles, Beaumont, Houston area, and would occur by summers end 2004 or 2005.

I theorized that disruption of the oil industry infrastructure in the form of a tanker or platform bombing would drastically spike the price of oil and push an already fragile global economic situation over the cliff.

The disruption and price spike came to pass for exactly the reasons I theorized, a disruption of the infrastructure, but this was not by intention. No terrorist act could hold a candle to what we have inflicted upon ourselves and future generations.

The difference between my prognostication and reality is that the delivery mechanism was not a willful act of man, but, much like a smoking gun, the fingerprints of his long term greed and ignorance are all over the trigger.
