Sports Time Update - The Larry Ellison Bowl?

World Series

It's the stuff dreams are made of, the Chicago White Sox, who waited 46 years to get back to the World Series, and the Houston Astros, who've never been there before; yesterday, played the longest game in World Series history, totaling 5 hours and 41 minutes.

After overcoming a 4-0 deficit, in the 14th inning, former Astro Geoff Blum won the longest game for the White Sox with a tiebreaking, two-out solo homer as Chicago beat Houston 7-5 Wednesday morning to move within a win of a sweep and its first title since 1917.

This was the first World Series game ever played in the state of Texas. Chicago used nine pitchers, both teams combined to use 17 pitchers, 43 players were used by both teams, which also combined to leave 30 runners on base, all World Series records.

14 innings matched a Boston Red Sox record when Babe Ruth pitched against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1914 Series. Chicago is trying to match the 1999 New York Yankees as the only teams to go through the postseason with just one loss since the extra round of playoffs was added in 1995.

Houston down 0-3 faces a mountain that has never been climbed. No team has ever overcome a 3-0 World Series deficit, and only one major league team has done it in any round of the postseason, the Boston Red Sox in last year's AL championship series against the New York Yankees.

NFL

Pittsburgh's defense exposed Cincy, and the Colts just keep chugging along 7-0 with the least points allowed in the AFC, setting up a 11/28 showdown with the Colts for AFC and NFL supremacy.

NCAA DIV I-A Football

After 29 consecutive victories and two consecutive national championships the USC Trojans were demoted to a #2 ranking by the BCS computer. Say what??

I thought champions are supposed to LOSE the title or at least the #1 ranking with a LOSS. Even though the human voted Harris and AP polls show USC as #1, the computer has decided that Texas is now #1. How can a computer overrule the human polls? It must know better, but then again it was programmed by humans.

Sorry but the Texas LongHorns who play in the Crippled Sisters of the Elderly conference are NOT the #1 team. If fact, Oregon or Cal could probably beat them handily, much less what Virginia Tech, Georgia or Alabama would do to them.

Another sterling example of why BCS stands for BULLSHIT Championship Series. Every major professional and college sport (in all divisions except football 1-A) have a playoff system to determine their seasonal championship.

The lower college football divisions have playoffs, why can't Division 1-A? Too many vested interests in the bowl system and the BCS. Where is Larry Ellison when you need him???

We could have the Oracle Bowl, instead of the BCS title game you know. Larry Elllison are you listening? Pony up $10 Million per school for the quarters, $10 Million per for the semis, and $10 Million for the final with a $20 Million winner take all prize. The top eight teams, major conference champions are invited.

The teams play single elimination seven games over a two week and three weekend period, which is less than the time taken for the current bowls. All eight quarterly schools would get $10 Million, the Semi's schools would get $20 Million, the winner would play three games and get $50 Million, the #2 team $30 Million.

Host city & advertising revenues would far outstrip all the current take by the major bowls and the $150 Million in prizes combined. Competition to host quarters, semis and final would be fierce. This thing would be bigger than the NFL playoffs.

The seven major bowls could even be integrated into the system, but somehow I don't think they want that. But, hey if you waved $150 Million is annual prize money and a share of the merchandising and advertising at the schools, I think the BCS and bowl contracts might just go south for the winter.

Thats $150 Million to stir the pot and finally get rid of the bullshit bowls and the bullshit championship series. A computer determines a mythical champion in a sport that deserves so much more than an unrelenting eastern press bias which has gifted us over the years with a plethora of false #1 rankings and obvious BCS title game mismatches.

Not to worry, if the USC vs. Texas BCS Title matchup does materialize, which it should. As in last years computer mismatch between Oklahoma and USC (another stalwart of the Crippled Sisters of the Elderly conference along with Nebraska); I will be betting heavily on USC and giving a slew of points (last year gave -21 to Boomer Sooner fans) to all the suckers who believe the press and BCS computer rankings and actually think the LongHorns will have a chance.

Like last year, it will be over by the half and a major blowout. Hey Larry are ya listening??? Get your name plastered all over seven major bowl games instead of a sail boat, for Christ sake! Buy these losers out, you spent more on Peoplesoft and Siebel, come on whats a $150 Million here or there? We could even name the trophy the Ellison trophy.
