World Cup 2010 Semifinals Update

Group Play: We picked 12 of the 16

Knockout 1st Round: 5 of 8

From our June 20th post: "Soft and Overrated: Brazil

As in the last cup, the South Americans are soccers version of showtime, all glitz, no defense.

They will shine early against the crippled sisters of the elderly.

But when they come up against a stout defense in the knockout round, its good night and good bye
."

As it was with Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina followed suit. The South American crybabies have been sent home en masse.

I concur with Johann Cruyff, I would never pay for a ticket to see Brazil play...

The Quarterfinals: 4 of 4... We stand by our prognostications.

Semifinals... Netherlands v Uruguay

The Netherlands have been stout on the back line, controlling at mid field, and able to score when necessary. Brazil were 34-0-2 when leading at half...

The Oranje "buffelen" put two on the girlie men in the 2nd half and are compelling as well as deserving to be in this game. On the other hand...

The remaining South American team are neither compelling, nor deserving and should have been sent home with the rest of the girlie soccer crybabies.

FIFA need to rethink their use of technology for offside, goals and penalty kicks. Were it not for Suarez cheating hand ball in the goal, Uruguay are not in this game.

On this kind of blatant action, red card, two match suspension and automatic goal without a penalty kick needing to be taken. But I digress...

Uruguay is outmatched and they know it. Their only hope is to play for a draw and take their chances on penalty kicks. The Netherlands will win an ugly match.

Germany v Spain

Spain lost its opening match 1-0 to defensive Switzerland; since they have done what is necessary to win their group; defeat a stout Portugal defense;

and take out outmatched Paraguay who were praying for penalty kicks. This is a rematch of the 2008 European Championship which Spain won 1-0.

So far Germany have blown out Australia 4-0; England 4-1 (should have been 4-2 excepting FIFA officiating idiocy); and Argentina 4-0.

What do those teams have in common? No back line or goalie. What happened when the Deutsche faced a defense?

The Deutsche lost to Serbia 1-0 (albeit, with a man sent off early); then struggled 1-0 v Ghana.

Bottom line: The Germans are a faster and better team than in the 2008 final. Is that enough to overcome Spain's backline?

This game will be a war, which will benefit the Netherlands in the final. We are going to stick with one of our original predictions...

From our June 20th post: "From which Netherlands will emerge to play a final redux of 1974 vs Germany"

However, it would not surprise us to see Spain somehow manage to upend the Deutsche juggernaut.
