The Battle Of The Bulge

Summary

  • Since 2013, people are spending more on eating out $706 billion, than eating in $695 billion.
  • Spending on food at home 1869 = 95% to 2013 = 50.4%. Spending on food away from home 1869 = 5.3% to 2013 = 49.6%.
  • This convergence has led to an epidemic of the overweight and obese with societal costs.
  • Meanwhile, tobacco use, smoking and its societal costs are on the decline.
Mark Perry's excellent missive on the convergence of money spent eating out vs eating in, inspired this missive.
"It's a little known fact that the smartest animal is a pig. Scientists say if pigs had thumbs and a language, they could be trained to do simple manual labor. They give you 20-30 years of loyal service and then at their retirement dinner you can eat them." - Clifford C. Clavin Jr. - Cheers
Last week, the USDA data showed something that has never happened before "over the last three months, spending at "Food Services and Drinking Places" was $152.6 billion compared to $149.8 billion spent on food at grocery stores from February to April."
