Employment Rate

The guvmint sez 5.2% unemployment. Reality sez, start with the Augmented unemployment rate (8.6%). It was created by Fed Chief Greenspan to give a fuller read on the economy.

And, if you use the broadest measure of unemployment (BLS's U-6 which incorporates the discouraged workers who have stopped looking, but are no longer receiving benefits) we're closer to 10.2%.

The labor force participation rate — the percentage of Americans either working or looking for work — fell in January to a seasonally adjusted 65.8%, the lowest rate since 1988,
