2014 MLB World Series Wrap Up

We stand by our playoff predictions 7-2, we'll take it. (See previous posts for details, WC/DS, DS update, LCS, WS.)

PRE WS SERIES notes:

From the post season statistics it is apparent that the Giants have the better starting pitching with the bullpens about even. Confirmed

KC has the batting edge (vs inferior pitching), however SF clutch hitting 2 strike & 0-2 count numbers are off the charts (vs better pitching).  Confirmed

KC has home field advantage, where the designated batter will be in play, they have red hot bats, are playing unconscious, and just do not know any better.  Confirmed

SF vs WAS... "these are the two teams that have the arms. I expect the winner of this series to run the table."  "[The Giants] when their pitching is on, they are money. To date, nothing has happened to alter my disposition. Confirmed

IMO, I would be surprised if the Giants didn't take both games at Kaufmann and head home to Baghdad by the Bay with their Beach Blanket Babylon brooms out for a clean sweep.  Not so fast Joe... those pesky Royal's just didn't know any better.

In the postseason when the money is on the table... postseason Giant road pitching has been taking the money. Confirmed

Since July 13th Giants with Bumgarner starting 13-5 (road 8-2). (Confirmed - See below)

2014 MLB World SeriesSF Giants over KC Royals - Nailed it

The Giants outhit BA .277 - .249 and outpitched ERA 3.98 - 4.28 the Royals.  But that wasn't the whole story...

Clutch Hitting: In the series, Giants batting: road BA .252 - .211; behind in count .233 - .172; and most of all with an 0-2 count, off the charts, .276.  (Bold - we noted these playoff stats in our last update.)

Meanwhile, the Royals choked on 0-2 counts BA .080; WHIP 0.26; ERA 1.17.

Pitching 101

No free passes: In 61 innings, the Giants only issued 11 walks while Royals pitchers issued 23.

WHIP = avg # of walks and hits allowed; hits + walks/innings pitched.  In other words, how many guys do your pitchers allow to reach base?  In the case of the Giants, a 2014 post season low WHIP = 1.01.

Bucking History

Everyone knew the Royals had these advantages:

Since 2003, the WS team with home field advantage was 8 of 11 and no road team had won a WS game seven since 1979.

And the Giants leading 3-2 had these:

Of the 63 World Series that stood at 3-2, the team with the lead had gone on to win it 42 times, or 66.7 percent. That had been the case in seven of the last 11 occurrences.

But did you know?

Teams playing at home down 3-2 (the Royals) in a best-of-seven World Series (2-3-2 formats only) were only 13-16 all-time. However...

They had won it all in eight of the last 10 instances and... only four road teams had won a Game 6 since 1980 - the 2003 Marlins, 1997 Indians, '92 Blue Jays and '81 Dodgers.

Up 3-2, the Giants lost Game 6 in KC, which led to the following off the chart probabilities...

Going back to 1982, when the home team won Game 6 to tie a League Championship Series or World Series, that team was 14-1 in Game 7.

In other words, if you lost Game 6, which the Giants did in grand fashion 10-0, 93.4% of the time you lost Game 7 and... the home team had won each of the last nine World Series Game 7's, that's 9 for 9 or 100%.

One of the big reasons the Giants managed to pull this off...

Bumgarner = $Money$

Bumgarner won games 1,5 & 7. (Bold=road win)
2014 Postseason: 1.42 ERA; WHIP 0.76

2014 WS: 0.43 ERA; 21 innings pitched
All Time WS: 0.25 ERAWHIP .528; H9 3.5; 36 innings pitched. (BOLD = All time leader, min 30 inn. pitched)

Interesting Codicil: With revenue sharing and expanded playoffs the Giants have now won 3 of the last 5 World Series, qualifying them as a dynasty.  Of what caliber?

Although they have not gone back to back, think (rings) Rose & Bench's Big Red Machine 70-76 (2); Charlie O's Mustached A's 70-75 (3).

The next level: Jeter's Yanks 96-00 (4); Mantle & Berra's Yanks 56-64 (4).

The benchmark's: Bauer, Mantle & Berra's Yanks 47-53 (6) and Joltin Joe's Mr. Coffee Yanks 36-43 (6).

Interesting Codicil's:  In only 5 seasons Giants catcher Buster Posey has won 3 WS rings.  In 22 seasons, Giants HOF legend Willie Mays, appeared as a starter in 3 WS (51,54,62) and won only 1 ring in 1954.

The most valuable player of all time? This HOF'er was only a lifetime .285 batter and never a Captain; however...
He was the cog that held a multi faceted wheel of stars together for two dynasties spanning 18 seasons in which he garnered:
14 World Series appearances;
10 Championship Rings (6 out of 7 years);
15 time All Star and 3 time MVP.

Who am I? Hint: "It Ain't Over, Till It's Over."  If I was gifted eight men and could pick only one, it would be the master of "Yogi-isms".
