Where Does It End?
PeteC: Just as the earth's surface has no end, and is 2-dimensional on a 3-D sphere, the universe is a 3-D "projection" in 4-D space-time. So it is referred to as a "finite and unbounded" topological construct. Another point is that the entire universe (all of physical reality) is much larger than the observable universe, due to its rate of expansion and that what we can observe is very close to flat (but globally it has sufficient curvature to close on itself, just as a sphere is closed).
Nattering - Perhaps that geodesic construct is contained within a "singularity", that which we think is a certain type of "black hole". Some black holes or portals never really "fully" form a black hole. Mersini has one foot on the right path - Black holes do not exist?
The controversy over Mersini-Houghton's paper.
DigDeep - still it must end somewhere, yes? then what's on the other side of where it ends?
The Nattering One muses.. that is one of the bigger mysteries. Maybe it doesn't end? There are some "new" theories that sport old ideas, math included. Always was, always shall be, interesting theoretical stuff.
We might never know. But what we do know... what are your earliest memories? Not getting smacked on the ass? So of what before then or whence we came?
For most, perhaps a beating heart, an epiphany of sentience "what am I" already being answered, then the eternal question comes, why am I?
At the other end, I have yet to have anyone come back and attest to what awaits, so I can neither confirm, nor deny. I tend to ignore the whispers of those who claim to have "proof" which usually turns out to be of an "exclusive" or divine nature. That package usually comes wrapped in faith and is the commodity and currency of organized religion, hope.
It must serve a purpose, as they certainly sell lots of it. So believing in those promises must suit and be of necessary comfort for some. Funny how the imposition of those beliefs never ends well for the natives, shiites, pagans, heathens, infidels or non believers. A dream for some, a nightmare for others.
All I know, which isn't much, one should try to enjoy the journey, and try not to obsess over the final destination. At least for now, for us, in this corporeal existence or construct, at some point, all good things must come to end. I think Dandy Don had it right....
