NCAA FBS: Of Unique and Dubious Distinction?
In the thick of March Madness, and with POTUS 45 getting a non conspiratorial Russian influence nod, mixed with potentially subtle tones of obstruction, in Ferris Mueller's Day Off? , we are giving Tuesdays with Trump a deserved rest. Not unrelated and apropos...
Speaking of unique and dubious distinction... why do we revel in the legitimacy of March Madness as opposed to the farce known as the BCS or BS Championship, in all its forms?
Many assume and few know or realize that NCAA FBS football has a uniquely dubious distinction....
In fact, the NCAA has NEVER officially endorsed or sanctioned any playoff system, nor named an FBS championship team. Above confirmed by carefully reading NCAA documents and statements.
This is diametrically opposed to the endorsed, sanctioned playoff system which has a named NCAA Division I FCS (formerly I-AA) champion (2017 North Dakota St).
In fact, Men's NCAA Division I FBS (formerly I-A) is the ONLY SPORT on the PLANET, amateur or professional, that has NEVER had a bonafide playoff system and where the so called "champion" is arbitrarily selected or contrived to suit the needs of the public's desirous opines.
Name who you like, as long as you pay... thus, the NCAA have left the ARBITRARY selection of a "National Champion" to other organizations and will of course, for a very large rights FEE, mention that "champion" in their publications.
To repeat the facts, there has NEVER been an NCAA Division 1 FBS sanctioned playoff system, nor NATIONAL CHAMPION.
The result of which has ALWAYS been and shall CONTINUE to be an imaginary fantasy champion based upon the opines of others, rather than being all inclusive, fair, and decided legitimately on the field of play.
When ALL FBS Div 1 teams are included in the process, and a winner from each conference is included in a fair and appropriate playoff system, the NCAA may finally sanction the process and certify a National Champion.
Until that day, its one big rotisserie college level league, wrought with pollsters, politics, computer rankings and politicized agenda based voting of dubious distinction. Enjoy the March madness.
