Explosion and Deaths at 3rd Largest U.S. Refinery

An unconfirmed number of fatalities (14) and injuries (75) have been reported in a major explosion and fire at a BP crude oil refinery in Texas City. Destruction at the plant was extensive, and huge plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles.

BP's Texas City industrial complex covers 1,200 acres and has 30 refinery units. The plant produces 30 percent of BP's North American gas supply. It employs about 2,000 people and is the 3rd largest refinery in the U.S. May crude futures rose almost 1 percent in after-hours trading Wednesday on the news of the blast at the third-largest refinery in the U.S.

Last year, I went on a limb and suggested the possibility of a near term terrorist attack on petrochemical infrastructure near the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (Houston/Port Arthur, Texas and Lake Charles Louisiana areas). Lets hope this is an accident and not the start of something bigger.

Act I: Afghanistan, Act II: Iraq, Act III: Iran or Syria??
