Intellectual Property an Oxymoron

Don Paul O commented: "Intellectual property" is actually a contradiction in terms. That is: the concept of "intellectual - property" is self-contradictory at its core, but most people can be trained to believe anything you want if you start early enough. Want some cool aide?

We Nattered: You are correct, as aggressive patent trolls (not unlike those lurking in these forums); the fact that business processes can only be patented in the US; and the ability to claim almost any single abstract idea, mental process or substantially all practical uses of a law of nature or a natural phenomenon, are somehow "intellectual property", make this one of the worst jokes being perpetrated on the public by a justice system that is completely out of control.

Just a sample of the stupid is as stupid does world we live in... Imagine you're on your way to deliver a case of beer to a party. Before you get there, your boss sends you a text: "They want 2 cases now." You read the text while driving (don't do that), so you deliver an extra case when you arrive. Having successfully completed that task, you leave for your next delivery.

Congratulations! You might get sued by the owner of April 2015's stupid patent of the month.

This month's winner, US Patent No. 9,013,334 (the '334 patent), has the prosaic title:

Notification systems and methods that permit change of quantity for delivery and/or pickup of goods and/or services

and was issued just last week, on April 21, 2015. As its title suggests, the patent claims a "method" of updating delivery information.

So if you send an email to your clients, advising them on the status of their orders, you are in violation... More details here. Please pass the Kool-aid and the patented crack pipe.
