In our previous episodes we had set the table for LDS with...
LDS needed to develop four abilities which would function for their customers via Internet:
1. Sell and print postage.
2. Track and trace priority service shipments.
3. Provision CA (certificate authority) services for email and electronic documents.
4. Based on #3 provision electronic bill payment services in local LDS delivery units and from homes/offices.
#3 and #4 was the BIG Kahuna... countless BILLIONS in future revenue handed to them on a silver platter, AHEAD of the curve.
Our keynote pointed to the fact that LDS should be using technology to do things that are not being done already.
Capped off with a glimpse into the future convergence.... finally, we gave our presentation on how the LDS Electronic Commerce Services would include a (CA) Certificate Authority for the registration of public keys.
Without getting too technical.... Public key systems, sometimes called asymmetric key systems use two encrypted keys, a public key and a private key.
In a two key system everyone has two related complementary keys, a publicly revealed key and a private key known only to the holder.
LDS could be the quasi governmental trusted 3rd party CA and in doing so, collect a fraction of each and every transaction involving...
secure email, legal documents, electronic payments, online notary services, escrow closings... and perhaps even a digital currency exchange for finance and banking.
In response to the above and the countless BILLIONS of dollars in potential future revenue...
the temporary acting head of LDS IT operations sat back and looked at us like we were an eight headed Hydra and bellowed to the whole room:
Not long after completing the .COM and tracking projects, and out of sheer disgust and frustration, I moved on to another contract.
Twenty years later, now that those ships have long since set sail and the opportunity to be the market leader has passed...
rather than being the leader in 3rd party CA and online/LDS office bill pay, and operating at a substantial profit....
remember, circa 1990 - 1996 the 1st class delivery deficit was only $2 Billion. How things have changed, the LDS now operates at an annual multi billion dollar deficit...
2012 $16 BILLION
2013 only $5 BILLION...
what an improvement in the loss of tax payer money. Simply brilliant, eh?
Interesting codicil, within 2 years of the presentation and after many years of service, the "visionary check floater" mysteriously left LDS.
Being such a technological innovator, he went on to a very successful executive level private sector IT career.
Just goes to show you... its not what you know, what you don't know or what you think you know, it is who you know.

"Boy, dat is abalutely ridiculous, I don't know 'bout you, but I will never pay my bills electronically.
