Comments from some friends....
"Good Riddance – Charlie Manson. Dead."
"And what exactly was the point of keeping him alive for 40 years?  In those kind of cases, I am pro death penalty."
We offer you now a little item called Chucky Unplugged, Finally?

Prior to his release from a third prison term in 1967; Chucky had spent more than half of his 32 years in prisons and other institutions.

Telling the authorities that prison had become his home, ol Chucko requested permission to stay, a fact mentioned in a 1981 television interview with Tom Snyder.  More to come on that later...

In 1971 Manson was found guilty of conspiracy to commit the murders of seven people, and was later convicted in two other slayings.

The Manson "family" tallied nine counts of first degree murder, which included the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders and those of Gary Hinman and Donald Shea.
"Mr. and Mrs. America--you are wrong. I am not the King of the Jews nor am I a hippie cult leader. I am what you have made me and the mad dog devil killer fiend leper is a reflection of your society. . .
Whatever the outcome of this madness that you call a fair trial or Christian justice, you can know this: In my mind's eye my thoughts light fires in your cities." - Manson's Post Conviction Statement
Up till his death, Manson denied ever participating or ordering others to commit the murders for which he was found guilty.

LAPD believes the Manson "family" may have claimed up to 12 additional victims, here is a report on 10 of those 12 unsolved murders.
“People are intrigued by what they don’t understand.” Susan Atkins
The level of public obsession during the trial and in the 46 years since, has been unprecedented.

In an effort to demystify the crimes and show them for what they were, a participant Susan Atkins-Whitehouse, wrote an uncorroborated account of those events titled "The Shattered Myth of ‘Helter Skelter’".

In particular, Chapter 22 on pages 62-63, speaks to the absolute senselessness of the crimes committed by the Manson "family".

At a 1993 parole hearing, Ms. Atkins gave an account of her victim Sharon Tate's last words...
“She asked me to let the baby live. I told her I didn’t have mercy for her.”
So how did this merciless group of killers make out?  You'll find out and more in Part 2: Manson Family Values?
