It's Getting Better? 1 - 2014

After the depressing discourse in The Fallout of Bad Choices; I'm attempting to make this missive more upbeat with a complete update to reflect 2014 prices; and the inclusion of some lyrics originally featured on The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album.

At the turn of the millennium "Getting Better" was made famous to a whole new generation courtesy of Phillips Electronics. One of the "telly" adverts featured three people moving into their mod retro beach front home, debating the positioning of a flat plasma TV; and it seems that life is just getting better all the time.

In the background surf rock twangs away, towards the end an updated version of the song chimes away. "I got to admit, it's getting better, it's getting better all the time." Well, isn't that special.

In today's posting, we have some extra special guest hosts, none other than Mr. Peabody and Sherman of Bullwinkle and Rocky fame. For those of us too young to remember, Mr. Peabody was a scholarly, scientific, professorial canine and Sherman was his not so bright, teenage human sidekick.

In an attempt to correct the problems of their time, our two hosts would regularly travel back in time, utilizing one of Mr. Peabody's most famous inventions, The Wabac Machine.

So, sit back and relax as we go on a "tragical mystery tour". Mr. Peabody, please set the date to 1965. Sherman, please hit the switch.

Back in the days of yore 1965...

Sherman: Wow things are sure inexpensive in 1965, but you don’t get paid very much either. And what are those 2005 & 2014 numbers?

Mr. Peabody: Well Sherman let me explain something:

According to the CPI calculator: a 1965 dollar is worth more than a 2005 or 2014 dollar. Just take the conversion factors of 6.20 & 7.57 and multiply by the 1965 dollars...

and Voila! You get what those 1965 prices would have been in 2005 (when we originally posted this series) & 2014 dollars. Isn't that extra special.

Sherman: Holy cow, in 1965 cigarettes are only 25 cents a pack! That’s cheap!

Mr. Peabody: How would you know that’s cheap?

Sherman: Uh, no, uh, I heard about it from Bullwinkle.

Mr. Peabody: Oh, alrighty then.

More to come in our next episode, Its Getting Better II? or The Smoking Moose?

Post Mortem:  In 2008, while on vacation in Alaska, Bullwinkle met an untimely fate...
