Coaching Common Sense?
Following up on Common Sense and The Steel Curtain?...
Let's not forget last years, "miraculous" Patriot Super Bowl comeback from 28-3 in the 2nd half. Said comeback from a Pats offensive point of view cannot be discredited.
However, when your opponents coaching staff, aides and abets your cause, its another story of epicially porcine proportion, which many gloss over with lipstick.
Specifically two plays....
Above, with 8:30 remaining in the game and a 28-12 lead, at his own 35 on 3rd and 1, Ryan was strip sacked resulting in the Pats recovering the fumble at the Falcon 25, and scoring a quick TD.
Below, with a 28-20 lead and less than 4 minutes to go, on 2nd and 11 from the NE 23, Ryan went down for another sack at the NE 38, knocking the Falcons out of range for what would and should have been the game clinching field goal.
These were two of the three mistakes the Falcons made all game long, not the players who played error free, just the brain trust or the coaches. In both cases, the coaching staff were out to lunch and totally vacant with their play calling.
Compounding matters... after racking up 86 yards and a touchdown on nine carries (9.6 yards), with a 28-9 lead and 2:06 remaining in the 3rd quarter, these dirty birds turned into turkeys with only four more rush attempts for 10 yards.
In other words, twice calling a PASS play when one should be RUNNING, and not attempting to run, and hold the rock with a huge 28-3 lead, cost the Falcons the Super Bowl.
Another example of play calling brilliance form this years Week 15 Steeler-Patriot game, which decided home field advantage for the AFC playoff's...
We can only hope that this Sunday's Super Bowl LII will be vacant of such senseless play calling. We've Nattered this before, we will Natter it again...
Tomlin's rejoinder when questioned regarding the ill advised goal line pass, which was picked resulting in the Steeler's loss to the Patriots:
