Avian Flu H5N1 Update - Captain Trips?

In the last month, Europe has experienced its first outbreaks - in Turkey, Romania and Croatia.

Today China confirmed H5N1's movement from Southeast Asia, in humans. Three avian influenza cases in Mainland China were confirmed by the Chinese Ministry of Health on Wed 16 Nov 2005. One 24 year old woman in Anhui Province died on 10 Nov 2005, and a 12 year old sister and a 9 year old brother were laboratory confirmed H5N1 positive.

The sister died on 10 Oct 2005. This is the first time that avian influenza cases have been found in Mainland China. The Chinese territory of Hong Kong recorded the first known cases of human infection with H5N1 bird flu in 1997, when it infected 18 people and killed six, according to WHO. The entire poultry population of about 1.5 million birds was slaughtered.

In Liaoning, the worst-hit province, officials said that they had vaccinated 320 million poultry and slaughtered 15 million.

Daily checks are being carried out on 72,000 people, and six are in hospital for observation. More than a million people, including soldiers, have been drafted in to work on bird flu prevention. Four of China’s nine outbreaks of the H5N1 virus have happened in the province.

Police roadblocks had been set up on all roads leading to Heishan county. Vehicles had to drive over corn straw matting, where they stopped to be sprayed with disinfectant. Carpets of lime surrounded the village.

Officials acknowledged that they had run into opposition to the cull, despite the offer of compensation. Zhou Liyuan, a spokesman for Liaoning province, said: “The masses did not understand why we had to kill their chickens, and some had strong opinions.”

No chicken survives within a three-mile radius of the outbreaks. “You can’t even hear a cock crow,” Zhao Wenxiang, a Taian villager, said. China announced late Tuesday that it would vaccinate all 5.2 billion chickens and other poultry in the country against bird flu, following 11 outbreaks since mid-October.

China becomes the fifth country to confirm human cases of bird flu since the beginning of last year, following Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam and bringing the total to 128 cases of which 65 were fatal. Vietnam has had 92 cases of which 42 were fatal, Thailand has had 21 cases and 13 deaths, Indonesia has had 9 cases and 5 deaths, and Cambodia has had 4 cases, all dead.

Also Wednesday, Vietnamese authorities reported bird flu outbreaks in three more provinces, bringing to 12 the number of cities and provinces affected recently. Vietnam is in the middle of a campaign to destroy all poultry in most of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, its two biggest cities.

Well, I guess the need for chicken feed which is soybean meal and corn will go down. In related news, U.S. wheat futures settled lower Wednesday after nearby Chicago Board of Trade wheat futures set new contract lows late on CBOT soybean losses due to concerns the human avian influenza outbreak in China may be worse than anticipated, brokers said.
