NCAA Football Update 12/04/05

In 09/19 Sports Update we called for USC vs. Texas in the Rose Bowl.

On 10/26 we begged
Larry Ellison to quit putting his name on the side of racing yachts, or trying to land an NFL expansion team in LA, and please sponsor a true Division 1A playoff system.

As predicted, Alabama did not survive their LSU & Auburn games. Meanwhile #5 Virginia Tech was crushed by Miami and Florida State (ACC Title Game); and #4 LSU got thumped by Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

Our final eight (and what the BCS final eight should have been): 1. USC 2. Penn State 3. Texas 4. Ohio State 5. Oregon 6. Notre Dame 7. Georgia 8. Florida State.

Sorry Virginia Tech & LSU, you were overrated to start with and lost your conference title games. Sorry West Virginia and TCU, you play in conferences of the crippled and lost to weaker teams.

A playoff of these eight teams would yield a final four of USC, Penn State, Notre Dame and Ohio State; And a title game of USC vs Penn State (which is what this years BCS title game should have been).

On 11/06 we speculated "should USC & Texas arrive in the Rose Bowl, the books will make the Trojans at least a 6 point favorite". Guess what? Big surprise, USC is a 6.5 point favorite over Texas in the Rose Bowl.

From
11/06 Sports Update, reiterating our position that Texas plays in the Conference for the Crippled Sisters of the Elderly, "we think an appropriate line for this years mismatch would be USC -17".

Our special line is at -16.5, and if Texas plays a perfect game and can force two USC mistakes, and get a garbage touchdown, theres a chance they could beat that spread.

We believe a secondary line at USC -9.5 is a good way to hedge the -16.5. It is highly recommended that those believing in the Trojans give the bargain -6.5 the books are offering, all day long.

Factoids: USC at 12-0 enters the Rose Bowl with: a 37-1 record with Matt Leinart as starting QB; a 16 game winning streak vs. top 25 teams; an overall 34 game winning streak with back to back national championships; winners of 45 of 46 and 52 of 56.

Should the Trojans finish ranked #1 by the AP: this would be only the third time a team went wire to wire ranked #1. Florida State did it in 1999 and USC did it last year. It would be the first time a team went wire to wire, back to back.

When the Trojans are ranked #1 by the AP: their record 61-4-2; 3-0 vs. #2 team ; 5-0 in bowl games. Most importantly, USC is 27-7-2 all time vs the Big 12.

No team has ever won 3 consecutive NCAA football national championships. Should USC win the Rose Bowl, it would also be the first threepeat in AP poll and Division I-A football championship history. Or should we say for the Trojans coach Pete Carroll "Three Pete"??

UPDATE: In the last few years, Cal, USC, Oregon and Oregon State have all been jobbed by the BCS and this year was no exception as the computer picked West Virginia, another sickly Eastern team (not unlike Texas), that preys on a pack of crippled second tier teams.

West Virginia's claim to fame, they lost to an even more pathetic Virginia Tech squad, which on Saturday was clubbed to death by a FOUR LOSS Florida State team.

Oregon was NOT given a BCS bowl berth, despite being 11-1 with the Ducks only losing to USC. Another big fat black eye for the sport of college football, the NCAA and the fans.
