This years Illionis Fighting Illini entered the NCAA tourney 29-1. They will be playing in the final on Monday night. Their single defeat came in the last second of the last regular season game when they were beaten by a three point shot, resulting in a one point loss. So close and yet so far. But did you know?
How many teams have gone undefeated and won the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament?
Answer: Only 7 teams have acheived this. The San Francisco Dons with Bill Russell and K.C. Jones were the first in 1956. The North Carolina Tar Heels in 1957 defeated Wilt Chamberlains Kansas in triple overtime. John Wooden's UCLA Briuns did it an incredible four times during the 60's and 70's (Wooden's 10 Championships are also a record). The last team with this honor: Bobby Knight's 1976 Indiana Hoosiers.
