Another Peak Oil Cufuffle - Part VII
We thank Kilted Green for his thought provoking commentary. A scientific paper published in Energia in 2001 concludes that:
"The claims which have traditionally been put forward to argue a connection between natural petroleum and biological matter have been subjected to scientific scrutiny and have been established to be baseless. Natural petroleum has no connection with biological matter."
If this claim is true, it completely debunks traditional "fossil fuel" theory. Bottom line: Whether its biological or abiotic is beside the point.
The cost of extracting oil has not gone up over the past century, it has held steady, untapped deposits are huge, and the technologies keep getting better.
In the long run, whether the abiotic theory or the peak theory is correct remains to be seen. Only the abiotic theory can be proved, disproved or obscured from public view at this point.
Self serving industry data and obvious pecuniary motivation would seem to at least obscure and attempt to dismiss the abiotic theory for the moment. One can only guess why this self serving approach is taken...
Hubberts peak oil theory cannot be proven until its too late. Much like drinking out of an obscured glass with a straw, you don't know its empty until you hit bottom and hear slurrrrrrpppp!!!
The silver lining in the Peak Oil theory is that due to economic necessity being the mother of invention, the mainstreaming of this unprovable theory may hasten the development of alternative energy sources and more efficient energy consumption technologies.
These developments along with the slow (abiotic or otherwise) replenishment of existing crude oil resevoirs, leads me to believe, that slurrrppping!! sound will never be heard.
By the way, something of much graver concern, the "peak oxygen" theory claims that our oxygen supply will soon run out.Just like "peak oil"; "peak oxygen" a somewhat transparent and obscured process.
Rising population demand, pollution, global warming and the UV leaking through the ozone hole are depleting atmospheric oxygen faster than plant life photosynthesis can replenish it.
Someday all life on Earth will go to take a breath and presto, sufficate simultaneously with a large sucking sound. Sound like peak oil??
'Peak Oil' fosters the belief that these are the "end days" of a technological civilization which is in decline and losing its power.
Its a handy way to scare the world into believing its resources are terminally finite, and that we must be led into war after war, that must be waged to "secure" those resources for our future survival.
This idea furthers manipulation of the public towards a consolidation of power and subjugation of the populace "for the good of the many".
Sound Orwellian? Its a page taken straight out of the neo con policy text book: Controlling popular opinion through fear.

It may be a temporary aberration. It may be an artifact of plotting (13 month centered moving average, single recursion). Or it may be an indicator that for whatever reason oil production is no longer increasing.
