Delta Air and Northwest Airlines blamed surging fuel prices for Q1 losses as they prepare to combine to form the world's largest carrier.

Delta's loss, was $274 million. Northwest had a loss of $191 million

Their deficits mean that all five of the biggest U.S. carriers were unprofitable last quarter, when jet-fuel prices jumped 63% from a year earlier.

US Airways will post a loss tomorrow. Today's losses pushed the deficit among major U.S. carriers to $1.38 billion.

Build em... Boeing's earnings topped estimates, sales +4%;

but reaffirmed its full year 2008 earnings guidance below the consensus estimate.

Boeing said Q1 profit jumped 38%, more than expected, as the world's #2 planemaker built a record backlog,

and increased deliveries +8.5% with 66% of its business going overseas.
